About the war in Ukraine

Dear members,

As we all know, there is a current war in Ukraine as the country is being invaded by Russia. I have many Ukrainian friends, and have been to Ukraine, as well as Russia, many times.

I have encountered a Russian member here who seems unaware of what really goes on and who believes in the lies told to him in Russian state television. This forum topic will be helpful for Russians to find truthful information on what is happening at the moment. A Russian translation is available in the follow-up post in this thread. This post is updated regularly to reflect the latest statistics.

15 years in prison for criticising the war in Russia:
In Russia, anyone who criticises the ongoing war will be arrested and face up to 15 years in prison. Even just calling it a "war" or "invasion" is enough. Link (New Window).

Suspension of media:
Media who have opposed the Russian warfare in Ukraine have closed down on order from the Kremlin. There is no opposition any more. Russia is turning into a police state. Link (New Window).

Prisoning children in Russia:
There are many thousands of Russians who have been arrested for demonstrating against the war. Even young children and very old pensioners, who all demonstrated against the war, are in Russian prisons. Link (New Window).

Severe international sanctions:
As a response to the aggressive warfare in Ukraine, Russia is being isolated. Banks are being shut down, credit cards no longer work, many companies are facing bankruptcy. Unemployment will be sky high. Link (New Window).

Leaving Russia soon no longer an option:
Russians who want to leave Russia are being questioned by the authorities. They ask about their stance on Ukraine and they check their mobile phones. Russia turn into a gigantic prison for the people. Link (New Window).

The warfare is costing money and innocent lives and severe destruction:
The Russian army is aiming at civilians: buildings, schools, hospitals. This is homicide and a humanitarian catastrophe. Link (New Window).
So far, more than 20,000 Russian soldiers (many of them young recruits and conscripts) have lost their lives in this meaningless war.
On top of this, the Russian army has lost huge numbers of vehicles, planes and heavy arms. Their "operation" is a fiasco.
The Ukrainian people are united and determined to protect their country from the enemy.

Russian war crimes:
Besides aiming at civilians, there are reports about Russian soldiers raping Ukrainian women. Link (New Window).

No nazis in Ukraine:
The Russian propaganda mentions "denazification" of Ukraine. But there are no nazis there. The president, Zelensky, is a jew. How can he be a nazi? Link (New Window).

No liberation:
In Russian media, as well as in Russian schools, people are told that the Ukraine will be "liberated". When the Russian army appears, the Ukrainian people shout, and even shoot, at them in anger to leave. Is that liberating? Link (New Window).

"Protecting" Russian speaking people:
In the Russian propaganda, the Russia speaking people are in danger in Ukraine. Yes, they indeed are because Russia is bombing their cities and civilians. These people hate Putin and Russia. Link (New Window).

"Homicide" in Donetsk and Luhansk:
In the Russian propaganda, the Russia controlled territories of Donetsk and Luhansk are suffering from "homicide" from Ukraine. This is plain rubbish of course.

Telling lies is a speciality of the Russian regime:
Putin has all the time stated that he has no intention to invade Ukraine. He has also promised to protect civilians, which has not been the case either. Whatever he says, no one can trust him.

4.5 million refugees:
The Russian warfare has caused 4.5 million Ukrainian women and children to flee their country to Poland, Romania, Hungary and Slovakia. Leaving their homes and lives behind.

Ukrainians and Russians are brothers/sisters:
This is no longer true. The Russians are killing people in a peaceful independent neighbour country. Why should they regard Russia in any positive way?

Huge war damages to be paid:
When Putin is gone from power, and the war has ended, Ukraine having control of their territories (including Crimea), Russia will need to pay a huge amount for war damages and reconstructions.

Putin the greatest thief of all times:
Putin is regarded as the richest man in the world, owning 200 billion dollars. Everything stolen from the Russian state. Still, many Russians are still unaware of it. Link. (New Window)

Re: About the war in Ukraine

(New Window).

(New Window).

If you are a Russian, and none of the links work, just let me know and I will upload the video to our server.

The complete text:

I have a message for my Russian friends, and for the Russian soldiers serving in Ukraine: There are things going on in the world that have been kept from you, terrible things that you should know about. But before I tell you about the harsh realities, let me tell you about the Russian who became my hero.

In 1961, when I was 14 years old, I had the chance to attend the World Weightlifting Championships in Vienna. Yury Petrovich Vlasov won the world-championship title, becoming the first human being to lift 200 kilograms over his head. Somehow, a friend of mine got me backstage. All of a sudden a 14-year-old boy was standing in front of the strongest man in the world. I couldn’t believe it. He reached out to shake my hand. I still had a boy’s hand. He had this powerful man’s hand that swallowed mine, but he was kind. And he smiled at me.

I never forgot that day. I went home and put his photo above my bed. It inspired me when I started lifting weights, but it angered my father. He didn’t like Russians, because of his experience in the Second World War, when he was injured in Leningrad. (The Nazi army that he was part of did vicious harm to that great city and to its brave people.) My father told me to take Petrovich’s picture down, and to find a German or Austrian hero. But I did not take the photograph down, because it didn’t matter to me what flag he carried.

Years later, I was in Moscow to film Red Heat, the first American movie allowed to film in Red Square. Yury and I spent the whole day together. He was so thoughtful, so kind, so smart, and very giving. He gave me a blue coffee cup that I still use every morning.

The reason I’m telling you all of this is that ever since I was 14 years old, I’ve had nothing but affection and respect for the people of Russia. The strength and the heart of the Russian people have always inspired me. That is why I hope that you will let me tell you the truth about the war in Ukraine. No one likes to hear something critical of their government. I understand that. But as a longtime friend of the Russian people, I hope that you will hear what I have to say.

I spoke to the American people this way last year on January 6, when a wild crowd was storming the U.S. Capitol trying to overthrow our government. There are moments that are so wrong that we have to speak up.

I know that your government has told you this is a war to de-Nazify Ukraine. This is not true. De-Nazify Ukraine? It is a country with a Jewish president—a Jewish president, I might add, whose grandfather’s three brothers were all murdered by the Nazis. Ukraine did not start this war. Neither did nationalists or Nazis. Those in power in the Kremlin started this war; this is not the Russian people’s war.

Let me tell you what you should know. One hundred forty-one nations at the United Nations voted that Russia was the aggressor and called for it to remove its troops immediately. Only four countries in the entire world voted with Russia. That is a fact. The world has turned against Russia because of its actions in Ukraine. Whole city blocks have been flattened by Russian artillery and bombs, including a children’s hospital and a maternity hospital. Three million Ukrainian refugees, mainly women, children, and the elderly, have already fled the country, and many more now seek to get out. It is a humanitarian crisis. Russia, because of its brutality, is now isolated from the society of nations.

You’re also not being told the truth about the consequences of this war for Russia itself. I regret to tell you that thousands of Russian soldiers have been killed. They’ve been caught between Ukrainians fighting for their homeland and the Russian leadership fighting for conquest. Massive amounts of Russian equipment have been destroyed or abandoned. The destruction that Russian bombs are raining down upon innocent civilians has so outraged the world that the strongest global economic sanctions ever enacted have been imposed on the country. Those who don’t deserve it on both sides of the war will suffer.

The Russian government has lied not only to its citizens, but also to its soldiers. Some of the soldiers were told they were going to fight the Nazis. Some were told that the Ukrainian people would greet them like heroes. Some were told that they were simply going on exercises—they didn’t even know that they were going into war. And some were told that they were there to protect ethnic Russians in Ukraine. None of this was true. Russian soldiers have faced fierce resistance from the Ukrainians who want to protect their families.

When I see babies being pulled out of ruins, I feel like I’m watching a documentary about the horrors of the Second World War, not the news of today. When my father arrived in Leningrad, he was all pumped up on the lies of his government. When he left Leningrad, he was broken physically and mentally. He spent the rest of his life in pain: pain from a broken back, pain from the shrapnel that always reminded him of those terrible years, pain from the guilt that he felt.

Russian soldiers already know much of this truth. You’ve seen it with your own eyes. I don’t want you to be broken like my father. This is not a war to defend Russia like your grandfathers and your great-grandfathers fought. This is an illegal war. Your lives, your limbs, and your futures are being sacrificed for a senseless war, condemned by the entire world. Remember that 11 million Russians have family connections to Ukraine. With every bullet that you shoot, you shoot a brother or a sister. Every bomb and every shell that falls is falling not on an enemy, but on a school or a hospital or a home.

I don’t think the Russian people are aware that such things are happening. So I urge the Russian people and the Russian soldiers in Ukraine to understand the propaganda and the disinformation that you are being told. I ask you to help me spread the truth so that your fellow Russians will know the human catastrophe that is happening in Ukraine. To President Putin, I say: You started this war. You’re leading this war. You can stop this war now.

And to the Russians who have been protesting on the streets against the invasion of Ukraine: The world has seen your bravery. We know that you have suffered the consequences of your courage. You have been arrested. You have been jailed and you’ve been beaten. You are my new heroes. You have the strength of Yury Petrovich Vlasov. You have the true heart of Russia.

Re: About the war in Ukraine

In the Ukrainian town Bucha, there is evidence on homicide. Many bodies of people who have been killed by the Russian invaders. Horrific pictures that the world need to see.

Kiev region. 21st Century. Bodies of executed men and women with their hands tied. The most brutal crime, such as those seen from WW2, are once again in Europe. This was done on purpose by Russia.

If you are a Russian who support your president, please look again, and see what he is responsible of. And not only him - the is a crime by the Russian state.

--

Re: About the war in Ukraine

Thank you for your posts, I have been following this conflict as close as I can. This is just insane…completely insane what is happening to the civilian population of that beautiful country. I know there is a lot of propaganda coming out from both sides but the fact still remains the same that beautiful people are being slain and killed for absolutely no goddamn reason. God bless.

Re: About the war in Ukraine

For me Russian attack was not surprise, I waited that and I wanted Ukraine get ready to defend themselves. Russia had gathered together so large army near Ukraine border and EVEN Putin promised all people in TV not to attack Ukraine, I was sure he lie again. Putin's purpose is to connect all old east European countries, which are now independent countries to Russia, the same as Soviet Union was before 1990. As old KGB agent, he is nothing but lier, everything base on lies in that country. Russian national TV and radio tells only lies and if people hear lies years after years, they start to believe in these. Propaganda and manipulation is effect way to affect in human's mind. Nobody knows, what % of Russian people really are with Putin, official number is 83 and it can be that.

Russia/Soviet Union has never respect any international or national deals. (Soviet Union attacked to Finland 1939 even we had agreement together not to have war together and when Soviet Union attacked, they lied Finland attacked to Soviet Union in Mainula). Who believe??? They do what they want and they believe in violence, military force and fear. Putin's purpose is to increase Russian influence in the world but now he did very serious mistake. I believe when Russia took Krim, Ukraine didn't fight back, didn't wanted war so Putin tought Ukraine's people are covards and it will be easy way to take all Ukraine, conquer that independent peaceful country, who wanted join in western, have democracy and freedom. Putin must have been worried if russians notice that democracy and freedom is better system than dictator, he wanted have Ukraine under his command, change it back to communism.

How wrong he was! Ukraine fight for it's life now. Now we see Ukraine's people are heroes, they are so brave and we can only respect that population high up! All countries should help Ukraine, so that ukraines beat Russian troops and hope that war costs so much that Russia end the war.

Putin maybe didn't understand, how much that cost to Russia finally. Putin propably tought western countries/ EU are not so together (maybe he connected western countries now together) Soon Russia is like North Korea: isolated poor country and most of the world are their enemies. Putin is definetely the most hated man in the world and especially Ukraine hate Russia forever. This war never forget, it remains in history. I wonder if Putin has been enough clever to know the result, had he attack Ukraine??? Was it worth that?
