Here is a comment made about it:
"Storyline:"Music Is My Best Friend". Everywhere you go, as long as you have this music, you have your best friend. This is represented in the clip by "shoulder buddies". Even when his new-found-romance fails him (dancefloor scene) he still has his music/his buddy, so off he goes. Only to have that taken from him too. As the muggers rip the casette from him, the earplugs fall out (thus, he loses his shoulder buddy). He is disconnected & alone in the dark alley of despair. Watch again & see
