I don't know if this clip is genuine, but it does show that larking about on shoulders can be risky. What does anyone else think? The spread if 'health and safety', perhaps has a point....

This is a sad story (when you read the lines aside the clip) - very sad!
In this case the totally stupid acting of another person caused the fall with the fatal end. This is how immediately a fun activity can turn into a desaster. Unfotunately shoulder riding is not a foolproof thing. Especially if you have brainless idiots interfering like this! It can only be recommended to stop instantly a shoulder ride if you have such people next to you who could be a real danger, the same goes for really drunken people. It's simply unreasonnable. The safety should of course be at the first place. But under normal circumstances a shoulder ride itself isn't any more dangerous than any other outdoor fun activity. If you have a reasonnable, experienced carrier it is no problem at all. There are undoubtly items that increase the risk of a fall like the things mentioned above or e.g. a slippy ground and many other things you could think of.
But again, this very extreme case is a big excepetion: a dry land three high ride and a very unlucky sudden fall with this outcome caused by a total moron...
I am sure that the statistical chance of being run over by a car is much higher than having an outcome of a shoulder ride like this.
I am shoked by the loss of a young live but I will not stop giving shoulder rides because this wouldn't have had to happen. Nevertheless I will keep an eye on the safety issue even more in the future!

Louie,
Very well put..We could not have said anything different or added more to what you said..
by looking at this tape, the only thing I can see is that this person hit his head on the ground..It seemed harmless by watching it..Many people always fall down hard when they play around..I have witnessed this also ..I think this could be the only case as a person actually dying from this..I think the odds are greater to have lighting strike you than to die from a shoulder ride..Careless or not..

Hi all - how incredibly sad to see a clip such as that on Youtube - given the Coronial enquiry that will have to occur into the girl in the middle and her subsequent death I am amazed they have allowed the clip to be shown on there at all. I am sure it will be taken down very quick. The kids going by the accents look like English schoolkids in around Year 7 or 8 - far too young for anyone to die that is for sure. This sort of brainless activity happens a lot in schoolyards - just look at the amount of clips of this nature posted in Youtube & Myspace etc. All shoulder rides & piggybacks have been banned in all schools in Australia for a long time, and the rule is stringently enforced by all teachers etc here. This is one rule I have no arguments with, given how silly kids can behave when amongst their peers. A 3 high on dry land should never be attempted, unless you have no-one near you who will act silly to try & knock you over. I recently did it with my two nieces and I can tell you it is incredibly difficult to achieve - a real balancing act, and the pressure it places on your back & neck is enormous. I will not be trying it too much again after I see the result of this video.
This does not mean I will retract my complaints from my earlier postings at all - shoulder rides in the water are very safe from my point of view, and I think the policing is way out of hand in these cases, but incidents like the above will make us all very wary in future for sure.

The other problem here is that this may not be a genuine posting given that it is Youtube? I just did a general search through all UK news items on Google looking for this particular death and there is nothing at all - yet such a thing would have made the news for sure. If it it not genuine, then again it is an even sillier thing to post at all. Anything goes on Youtube though.

Scotty,
If this indeed is some kind of hoax and it never really happend, then I would think the person's involved with this video are indeed sick,or trying to get some type of sick attention...Youtube and myspace have actually gotten stricter as what is shown on their respective websites..
Why this video is still on youtube is a mystery..It is really hard for them to see and target every video on their websites..Impossible really..they go on tips and imformation..If a person complains about a video, then they will check it out and see if it should be removed or not..I would bet NO one yet has complained about it to them..
another thing about youtube and myspace and other video sharing sites are ......
they will crack down and delete a copywrite video, but when it comes to something of this nature, they turn their back and close their eyes and let these type of videos stay on..
I have been doing a lot of searches on these sites..I have seen videos on their websites and I wonder how in the world they are on,yet other videos which mean no harm are deleted..I do not understand the mentality..
Scotty, back to the video with this girl..Many times there are things going on this world, and the media just not does say anything about them..A lot of weird and major things go on in this weird on a daily baisis, yet no one speaks about it..this video is quite possible that it is true and not fake..
Here is something really stupid when I had gone on a buisiness vacation in the united states..
had seen a public swimming pool to stake out some shoulder rides if possible..
they did not allow any horsing around as sitting or standing on shoulders or fighting in the pool....YET...they would let teenage kids climb a 3 high tower to jump off and dive into the water..I am not talking about a 3 person tower,I am talking about a real tower which seemed to me to be around 30 feet high or so..they let kids do this, but yet they don't allow a shoulder ride?I did talk to one of the guards and he told me,he just works and follows orders..He said city hall is probably the one doing these rules..I was thinking about this for quite some time after I had left..I would have loved to ask city hall what logic they had behind their rules as you could dive into the water from that tower, yet no shoulder rides..then again, this is city hall and we know most politicians do not make any sense..
