Did anyone see the news article about the wife-carrying competition held last week in the UK?
The event was about who could carry another person the quickest over a set distance. Although the event was/is called 'wife-carrying,' in these days of non-discrimination, competitors had the choice (if they wanted to) to carry: woman on man, man on woman, man on man, woman on woman.
You're probably thinking that this event was a chance to see lots of competitors carrying their partners on their shoulders. Yes, there were a few women sat astride their husbands' or partners' shoulders. But most of those being carried were slung over the carriers' shoulders, heads down and facing the carriers' heels, with their thighs/legs splayed either side of the carriers' heads. And the carriers were holding on to the back of legs of those they were carrying.
Later this year there is going to be an international wife-carrying competition so there will be another opportunity to see the various ways the competitors with be carrying their wives/partners/friends. One of the rules is that couples who participate must be related in some way or friends.
What may be of interest to members of this forum is that these wife-carrying events, which are held yearly in various countries plus one yearly international event, give members the opportunity to indulge their love of shoulder-riding (whether as riders or carriers) in public without any stigma or embarrassment. So a guy could carry a woman on his shoulders or a guy could carry another guy on his shoulders and, of course, a woman could carry another woman on her shoulders. You'd be videoed and photographed by the media and onlookers at the event. But the main point is that it is a fun event and an event where shoulder-riding can be done not only publically but also with the approval and encouragement of the public.
If there are any carriers in this forum who cannot find females riders then they could go along to one of these wife-carrying competitions and ask just about any females who are there watching the event whether they would like to join in the competition and be carried. Great opportunity!

I can only imagine that a very strong athletic man carrying a light woman who was a confident rider would have a serious advantage in the shoulder riding version. I can't imagine myself suffering through an event that had me being carried over a man's shoulder like a sack of grain and being bounced around that way.
In this day of acceptance of homosexual relationships, I can imagine there would be at least a few men carrying other men on their shoulders, at least for the fun of the event . Based on physicality (male vs female) I think it would be unlikely that a male on male couple would win (men being heavier on average), but I think it would be interesting to watch.

The wife-carrying world championship event is held yearly in the Finnish city of Sonkajärvi. They came up with the hole idea as a marketing thing, trying to get more tourists to visit them.
First people didn´t take the event so seriously, so a lot of couples entered for the fun of it. Now the event is very competitive, but there are some categories that are for anyone. Shoulder riding is very rare. It´s not a very fast way to carry someone through an obstacle race.
Here´s their homepage. You can sign up for the event already.

In the UK newspaper article about this event, the main photograph that accompanied the report showed a wife sat astride her husband's shoulders facing the camera, so not that rare maybe. But, as you say, a competitor who is carrying someone on his or her shoulders would not be able to run round an obstacle course as fast as another competitor who was carrying someone slung over his or her back.
Maybe the organisers could have different categories, one of which could be for a race to see who could carry someone who was sat astride their shoulders in the traditional way in the fastest time over a certain distance? Events like this could be a way to make shoulder riding more of a sport.
At the moment shoulder riding is generally only seen at pop concerts (girls on guys) and at sports events (mainly in the US) by cheer-leaders. One variety of shoulder riding I like to watch is where a fairly strong guy lifts two females onto his shoulders where each of the females sit sideways astride each of his shoulders and facing him and each other. This is usually done as a showbiz or circus act and the two females are usually dressed in skimpy bikini-type outfits. For the guy who is doing the carrying, this must be an erotically close encounter for him. I guess he has to resist the temptation to look sideways!

Gunde is right. I have been there almoust every time and I shot earlier also videos from intresting scenes. There has been good scenes and I remember very nice memories when it started. It was small event and one woman in short dress asked his boyfriend take her on his shoulders and this woman sit all the time. Little bit rest and again on shoulders ;-)
Even it is called "wife carry world championship" woman don't have to be wife, no girlfriend or even friend. Some men cary unknown girls too. I think the name should be change.
This event is more humourist than real competition, I guess and speaker is very funny and tells jokes, makes people laugh. Some competitors take it seriously but mostly they just want to have fun. There are different classes, one is called "best clothes".
