Some of the best stories from the trip occurred on the transportation from Bakau to Saly. Firstly, when we arrived to the ferry station, we discovered that the ferry was not running that day. So, our only other option to cross the water was to take a pirogue, colorful, wooden fishing boats. This ended up being quite the adventure. The pirogues are actually quite big and they cram about 50 passengers and their luggage on board. In order to board the boat, which stays resting in the water, you have to get a man’s shoulders so he can walk you through the water! I was actually on a random man’s shoulders for about 10 minutes trying to get to the boat, and the water got pretty deep (he was submerged up to his chest).
