This afternoon, about two and half hours ago, I was walking along the clifftop when suddenly, totally unexpectedly, coming into view gradually from up a steeply sloping path from the beach, was a good-looking tousle-hair young guy who looked about 14 sat astride the shoulders of an older guy. At first glance I thought it was a father carrying his son on his shoulders but the carrier was too young. The carrier was about 18 so I guessed it was the rider's older brother giving his younger brother a shoulder-ride. They were laughing like mad and really enjoying themselves. The path up from the beach was very steep so I guess the challenge was whether or not the older brother would be able to carry his younger brother all the way up to the top. When I saw them - I just happen to be at exactly the right place at the right time - they had just reached the top of the path at the top of the cliffs. I wished I'd been carrying my digital camera. There again, maybe it wouldn't have been appropriate to have taken a picture. In future, perhaps I should walk around with one of those small concealed cameras? The main thing though is the way shoulder-riding is becoming so popular. I seem to see it happening everywhere these days. Is this website responsible for popularising this activity? Maybe!

I love witnessing wonderful surprises like that. There have been times when I have stayed in hotels with balconies over a pool or a lake. I have seen some wonderful shoulder riding and always get angry with myself for not having a camera with me. Or sometimes I have a camera but by the time I grab it and get it turned on and setup, the riding is finished. I think I need to ensure that I setup my camera as soon as I check into my room and then be prepared for anything.

You're right there, mountmeforever. One of the best places to watch plenty of shoulder-riding is from baconies at hotels with swimming pools (for us in Europe that would be places like Spain or any holiday destination that hot, sunny and cheap). So, just like aircraft spotters go to airfields to watch planes landing and taking off, so a shoulder-riding 'aficionado' could go to a suitable hotel and book a room overlooking the pool and spend (almost) the entire holiday videoing shoulder-riding antics taking place there. The only thing I'd say is that it's usually women shoulder-riding guys; rarely guys shoulder-riding other guys. Saying that, these young lady riders usually wear the tiniest of bikinis. Watching the carriers' heads bobbing up and down in the water clamped between the thighs of these boisterous young ladies is a totally electrifying sight!
