Maybe because they want it so badly to be true that they end up lying to themselves first of all ... ???? The border between the dreams and reality is often blurred by the fog of fantasies ...
That being said, as a reader, I prefer a good story to a poor one, and I don't care whether it is true or not, based on a lie or on hard truth !

We humans can trick our brain to derive pleasure or enjoyment. We go to see a movie knowing that it is completely fake, but we still enjoy it.

My point was that a writer would enjoy writing a fiction and the reader would enjoy reading it. I am talking about professional book writers or movie makers. If given a choice mostly a reader would opt to read an interesting fiction than a boring nonfiction.

But if a writer claims a fiction to be some true story, you see raised eyebrows and the writer lands in problems if he does not have enough evidence.

So if a fiction is interesting enough, who cares whether it is based on a lie or hard truth, but why the writer has to claim that fiction is a truth?

However your first sentence was convincing enough.
